You can pick any state, any area, or any construction site, and they can all tell similar stories of construction site crime. Why? Because construction sites of all sizes contain high-value items that will attract incidents of theft, like this one in Portland, Main.
Two people are now under arrest after $20,000 worth of copper was stolen from the construction site of Portland’s new Homeless Services Center. Police were notified of two people exiting the site on Riverside Street around 11 p.m. on Monday, August 22.
When they arrived, officials say they heard noises from a nearby section of the Portland Trails trail system. According to authorities, the suspects were pushing wheelbarrows loaded with copper that had been stolen from the site.
An officer checking nearby businesses found a pickup truck in the parking lot of Waste Management. The truck, belonging to one suspect, contained several battery-powered tools belonging to the company at the construction site, officials said.
Portland police say in addition to the $20,000 worth of copper, the tools were estimated to be worth $8,500.
The two are facing charges of burglary, felony theft, criminal mischief, and refusal to submit to arrest.
All this from two inexperienced thieves. Even worse, most of it was caught on video.
Video Surveillance Isn’t Enough to Protect your Construction Site
Construction sites are filled with valuable items such as expensive tools and equipment, building supplies, and fixtures that make theft a prevalent problem. Not only are these expensive difficult to replace, but the time it takes to replace those stolen goods and their rising costs and interrupt the project. In this particular instance, this construction site had video surveillance – so why was the suspect able to successfully commit the crime and escape?
Typical CCTV surveillance systems that are frequently deployed at these sites only record footage accessible remotely through cloud-based technology or stored for later viewing. This means they can just show you who or what is tripping an alarm at your site. There isn’t too much to do other than to see and record the security event happening and alert the authorities, allowing for a significant amount of time to pass for suspects to get away.
Imagine Having Construction Site Video Surveillance that can:
- Prevent construction site crime in real-time
- Increase criminal apprehension rates
- Protect your site, tools, materials, and equipment
- Be cost-effective
Why the Industry is Adopting Remote Video Guarding
Remote Guard Intervention serves as a comprehensive, monitored video solution that takes security a step further because the system collects audio and visual data, checks for irregularities to secure the site’s perimeter, and provides you with mobile/remote access to live and recorded audio and video. Trained security operators can then intervene through the use of live, two-way audio talk-down features that deter trespassing and theft. This comprehensive intervention solution will increase the likelihood of priority police response, minimize losses, and increase apprehension rates.
Sounds too good to be true? It’s not.
Remote guard intervention allows security operators to catch intruders in the act, verbally warn, alert law enforcement for priority response, and monitor the situation in real-time. In most cases, remote guard intervention can get the intruder to leave the property before law enforcement arrives. Remote guard intervention can add immeasurable value to your peace of mind and your site’s overall security.
- It deters criminal activity and minimizes losses
- It increases apprehension rates and the likelihood of priority police response
- It offers trained operator support – meaning less headache for you!
Having video intervention via Live Remote Guarding by trained operators eliminates the need for patrolling security guards and security anxiety because any situation is immediately handled. If you ever require any kind of support, operators are always there to assist.
